The University of Calgary Dinos men’s hockey team won their playoff game today over our city rivals, the Mount Royal Cougars. It was the third and deciding game of their best-of-three series in the Canada West semi-finals (the Dinos had won the first game 3-2 while the Cougars won the second 5-2).
I attended the first game of the series on Friday evening at the Father David Bauer Arena. It was an exciting and classic game. The speed and relentless effort of the players on both teams was amazing. What superb athletes. The game was also fast in the sense that there were several stretches of time without whistles. Changing-on-the-fly (what a brilliant and distinctive concept for the game of hockey!) kept the game at a feverish pace for minutes at a time.
The Mount Royal defence was superb in the first game and made it difficult for the Dinos offence to penetrate their zone and get quality shots on goal. Regulation time ended with the game tied 2-2. The energy level of both teams was high throughout all periods and it took a goal by Dylan Walchuk in the second overtime period to secure the win for us.
Having won the semi-final series, the Dinos now go on to play the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the Canada West finals this weekend in Edmonton. Well done, team. Go Dinos!
